I haven't really been posting much lately, have I? A lot's been going on, I actually had to go back through my last couple of entries to see what I was up to.
Last time I posted, I had failed to get into the landscaping job thing, and decided to go into mining training. While I was talking with my "agent" at the employment place, she mentioned two things: an expo for mining and gas drilling jobs was happening, and a course for a Certificate II in Electrotechnology had come up.
About the former: Over the next few years, they're doing some major mining projects, and are looking for skilled workers ("skilled" means "has a trade qualification" in this industry) to come and work for them, so they promoted it with a small expo. The pay and benefits are amazing. However, I'm unskilled, so no dice.
The latter, however, is somewhat more interesting. The government is predicting a surge in demand for electricians (just look at the way technology and telecommunications are going) and decided to offer a course designed to get people into the electrical trade. This is a big deal because while electricians need to know the most theory alongside their practical work, they're also at the tippy-tip-top of the tradie food chain. Work is everywhere, and the pay is quite high. Therefore, sparky apprenticeships are rare and in high demand.
I looked into the course. The goal is to get you this Electrotechnology certificate, which is basically a blanket course for electricians, and then use that set of skills to market you into an apprenticeship, which will get you your trade certificate. Apprenticeships remain the only way to get you one of these, and tradies love apprentices who already know a thing or two. All in all, a rather clever plan.
So! I applied, got asked to attend an interview (which I fucking nailed), and today, got called with a notice of acceptance.
Some of you might be asking, "Joseph, didn't you dislike your painting apprenticeship?" Why yes, yes I did. Painting doesn't pay well, the work is scarce, and it's BORING. But electrical work is everywhere, and it will only get more everywhere. It pays very well, better than any other trade. And the icing on the cake? It's interesting! Technology and science FASCINATE ME. I can't think of any other trade that I can see myself actually getting excited about and having fun in.
So! This is the plan. I'm going to do this course, it's going to take a few months, and I'll get my Cert II. I'll get an apprenticeship, work for four years, and get my trade qualification. And then I'll fuck off to Canada. The Department of Immigrations loves tradespeople.
Wait a minute... I didn't properly explain why I want to go Canada, did I? Not as a proper plan? Oh well. I'll talk about that in a later journal, it's an entirely different matter.
Long story short, this is my long-term goal, one I have a solid, definite plan of attack for, one that I can get excited about without feeling guilty. The course starts in two weeks. I have a feeling that these next five years are going to be very interesting. :D

In other news, I would appreciate prayers/thoughts/vibes for my dear friend
umbravita. She's got a busy and challenging year ahead of her, and any help offered would be appreciated. Thank you.
